We have a commitment to becoming a Rights Respecting School and put the articles of the United Nations Convention for the Rights of the Child at the heart of all school policies.

One of the aims of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (which is referred to as FOIA in the rest of this document) is that public authorities, including all maintained schools, should be clear and proactive about the information they will make public. To do this we must produce a publication scheme, setting out:

  • The classes of information which we publish or intend to publish
  • The manner in which the information will be published
  • Whether the information is available free of charge or on payment
The scheme covers information already published and information which is to be published in the future. All information in our publication scheme is available in paper form. Some information which we hold may not be made public, for example personal information. This publication scheme conforms to the model scheme for schools approved by the Information Commissioner.

This document is a statement of the aims and principles of the School, for ensuring the confidentiality of sensitive information relating to staff, pupils, parents and governors.

St Margaret’s at Hasbury Church of England Primary is situated in the south of Dudley Metropolitan Borough in the district of Hayley Green. It borders Birmingham and Hereford and Worcester and is on the edge of a large Green Belt. It is a spilt site with a right of way dividing the two buildings

It is a residential area comprising both private and council housing. The private housing varies from small semi-detached properties to large detached ones. The council housing varies from blocks of flats to well maintained semi-detached houses. The school was built in 1897 and has benefited from recent extension and structural improvements. It has extensive grounds which are well maintained and not abused by pupils or the local community.

St Margaret’s at Hasbury is a one form entry primary school with 210 children on role. The children are of mainly white ethnic origin, with 45 pupils from ethnic minority backgrounds.

The purpose of this document is to provide guidance to head teachers and governing bodies on charges which can be made for activities. The Guidance will also assist in determining the school’s policy on charging and remission and will be of particular benefit when considering school visits and journeys.

Schools have a duty to provide parents with information, regarding what charges can and cannot be made for services provided. The objectives of the charging and remissions provisions set out in the legislation are:

  • To maintain the right to free school education
  • To establish that activities offered wholly or mainly during normal teaching time should be available to all pupils regardless of their parents’ ability or willingness to help meet the cost; (to determine whether the activity is in school time see calculation in Section 5
  • To emphasise that there is no statutory requirement to charge for any form of education or related activity, but to give LEAs and schools the discretion to charge for optional activities provided wholly or mainly out of school hours
  • To confirm the right of LEAs and schools to invite voluntary contributions for the benefit of the school, or in support of any activity organised by the school, whether during or outside school hours

The prevention of fire is of vital importance. Most fires are caused by carelessness and ignorance. It is the responsibility of all personnel to become conversant with these instructions. Upon outbreak of fire the saving and preservation of life takes precedence over the salvaging of property. A member of staff’s first duty is to look after the children and this will mean the evacuation of the building. No attempt should be made to fight the fire until their safety is ensured, and then without exposing any person to risk.

This policy seeks to cover disclosures and allegations of serious wrongdoing made by anyone (including Dudley Council employees/workers, schools where the local education authority is the employer, academies, voluntary aided schools, foundation schools, contractors, seconded council employees). It also covers suppliers and those providing services under a contract with the Council in their own premises, for example, care homes, to this end. Where this policy makes reference to a whistleblower; it refers to any individual or a member of the public who is making a disclosure or allegation of any serious wrongdoing.

The partnership between home and school is invaluable at all stages of your child's development. We greatly value the work parents do with their children at home.
The amount and type of work that children bring home will vary.

All children are encouraged to take their reading book home and read regularly. Reading activities and word games are particularly helpful. The degree of independent reading and reading to an adult will of course vary, according to the child's stage of development.

As children progress through the school, we try to encourage the development of good habits such as:

  • Organising time, finding a regular homework or reading time which fits in with other activities outside school, but does not leave everything to the last minute (often mornings are better than late at night)
  • Trying to find a quiet place to work
  • Using local libraries for extra reading books and to help research topics

Children may sometimes be asked to finish work at home, if the teacher feels the child should have been able to complete the work at school.
We always welcome parents being involved with their children's work, but appreciate that circumstances can be difficult. If your child comes across problems please come in and discuss the matter with the class teacher.
At the end of the Primary Years we are aiming for the majority of children to have acquired:

  • A handwriting style that is fluent, joined and legible which is produced quickly and without wastage of effort and time
  • Presentational skills that show that children are taking a pride in their work so that the quality of the content of their work is enhanced and not impeded by presentational issues
  • The consistent and correct use of full-stops, capital letters, question marks, with the majority of pupils using punctuation within sentences
  • Spelling that is generally accurate

Primarily, we want to encourage the children’s enjoyment and enthusiasm of English writing. We want them to be creative, imaginative and bold in their work.

However, we also want pupils to have due regard for the secretarial skills of cursive, legible handwriting, accurate punctuation and spelling, and presentational practices which will enhance the quality and clarity of their work.

To achieve these high expectations, there must be a consistency of approach, so that children are clear about what is expected from their written work.

Staff have received INSET from Martin Harvey, and follow his suggested plan of teaching the handwriting skills.

This policy sets out the aims and contexts in which educational visits take place in our school.

A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect. (National Curriculum, DfE 2014)

We believe feedback and marking should provide constructive feedback to every child, focusing on success and improvement needs against learning objectives; enabling children to become reflective learners and helping them to close the gap between current and desired performance.

Following the removal of National Curriculum levels, St Margaret’s at Hasbury Church of England Primary School has taken a considered and collaborative approach to introduce effective systems for both assessments of learning, and for tracking pupils’ progress.
We are working with other local schools, including those in the Halas Trust, to build a consistent approach on assessment.

This outlines some of the approaches to teaching and recording calculations throughout school. You will notice many changes in the way children are taught to record their calculations from when their parents and teachers were at school, the aim being to encourage understanding and not just teaching tricks!

This policy reflects the school’s aims and objectives in relation to the teaching and learning of English. It sets out a framework within which teaching and non-teaching staff can operate. It gives guidance on planning, teaching and assessment. The policy should be read in conjunction with the Early Years Foundation Stage framework and the National Curriculum. These set out the rationale for teaching each area of the English Curriculum and specify the skills that will be developed for the majority of pupils in each year group. This document is the outcome of consultation and review undertaken by the English lead teacher with the staff.

Regular attendance at school is essential to ensure uninterrupted progress and to enable children to extend their potential. The attendance pattern for all children is monitored weekly with the school seeking to work actively with parents to ensure a regular pattern is maintained. Non-attendance is an important issue that is treated seriously. However each case is different and the school acknowledges that no one standard response will be appropriate in every case. Consideration is given to all factors affecting attendance before deciding what intervention strategies to apply. In every case, early intervention is essential to prevent the problem from worsening. It is essential that parents keep the school fully informed of any matters that may affect their child’s attendance.

St Margaret's at Hasbury Church of England Primary School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children and young people both within the school environment and outside. Because of their day to day contact with children and young people, education staff are particularly well placed to observe outward signs of abuse, changes in children's behaviour or their failure to develop. We need, therefore to be alert to the possibility of abuse occurring, aware of the procedures to be followed if they have suspicions and have the confidence to follow those procedures. As part of this approach, we are committed to using the 'Safeguarding in Education checklist, which is aimed at supporting the school leadership and governing body in fulfilling our statutory duties as set out above.

Our philosophy is to foster mutual respect for individuals, together with care and respect for the environment in which all members of the school community work and play. This requires from everyone an understanding of and commitment to a consistency of approach, to ensure that expectations of what is acceptable behaviour are clear to all pupils and adults working within the school, and to parents/ carers and visitors. This will be achieved by promoting and recognising responsible behaviour through encouragement, praise and example.

In creating such an ethos, our school will have a positive and lasting influence on the social and moral attitudes of all pupils. Difficulties will not be dealt with in isolation. All adults working in school can feel that they will be supported by colleagues from whom they can seek advice and expertise. We believe the active involvement of parents in their children’s school life is an essential part of the support process and will be sought and welcomed.

We aim to make this a happy and exciting time for your child and our many pre-school activities help us to achieve this. Many of our children transfer from the Hasbury Pre-School (which is an integral part of our foundation stage provision) to our reception class. This enables a smooth transition through this key stage and is further enhanced by the Hasbury Toddlers, our Parent/Carer/Toddler group which meets twice a week in our Early Years’ hall. Before your child begins school, you and your child are invited into school for visits. This is followed up by a home visit by the class teacher and teaching assistant. These are invaluable times for you and us to get to know each other and build up the positive partnership between school and home which we know is so important for ensuring your child gets the very start here at St. Margaret's at Hasbury.

When children start school, we ask parents to complete an admission form. As you will appreciate, there may be times when we need to contact you, for example, in the case of illness. We maintain a computer and a 'record card' system to help us in cases of accident or illness. Please notify us of any changes in telephone numbers, mobile numbers and home addresses, so that we can keep our records up to date. We would appreciate you sharing information with us regarding illnesses, allergies or medication.

For those children who wish to join us during the school year, we welcome visits by parents and children. Please telephone the School Office and speak to our School Business Manager, Mrs Clarke to arrange an appointment.
The section 29 of the 2002 Education Act requires governing bodies to establish procedures for dealing with all complaints relating to the school or the provision of facilities or services, other than “complaints which fall to be dealt with in accordance with procedures required to be established by other statutory provision”, and to publicise these procedures.

While the majority of complaints received by schools are properly dealt with by other procedures, it is still necessary for schools to have a “general” procedure for the minority of complaints that are not covered by other statutory procedures.

This Special Educational Needs policy, details how St Margaret’s at Hasbury Church of England Primary School will do its best to ensure that the necessary provision is made for any pupil who has special educational needs and how those needs are made clear to all who are likely to teach him/her. The school will do its best to ensure that all teachers in the school are able to identify and provide for those pupils who have special educational needs.

This policy complies with regulation 51, schedule 1 of the Special Educational Needs and Disability Regulations 2014. (Amended 2015)

The requirement to ensure that children and young people are able to use the internet and related communications technologies appropriately and safely is addressed as part of the wider duty of care to which all who work in schools are bound. Our school’s E-Safety policy should help to ensure safe and appropriate use. Our school must demonstrate that it has provided the necessary safeguards to help ensure that we have done everything that could reasonably be expected of us to manage and reduce these risks.

Online safety and our school policies

All our school policies adhere/relate to the schools e-safety policy and filtering/monitoring procedures. In school we use the DGfL’s monitoring solution which is provided by e-Safe. E-Safe’s detection technology monitors imagery, words and contextual phrases, during online and offline activity, to identify behaviour which may represent a safeguarding risk or breach of acceptable use policies.
